Abstract

Objectives: The objectives of the study were to evaluate the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of methanol leaves extracted from Morinda coreia and to identify volatile and semi- volatile compounds by GC-MS analysis.

Methods: Antioxidant testing methods such as radical scavenging assays and reduction assays were carried out from leaves extracted from Morinda coreia. for the evaluation of antibacterial activity, agar well diffusion method was performed and by using GC-MS analysis volatile and semi volatile compounds were analyzed.

Results: Antioxidant activity such as DPPH radical scavenging activity of leaves extract of morinda coria was found to be47.47% at 120 µg/mL concentration and the IC50 was126.39 µg/mL concentration, superoxide radical scavenging activity of leaves extracted from Morinda coreia was 61.08±0.43% at 120 µg/mL concentration and the IC50 was 80.25 µg/mL concentration ,phosphomolybdenum (Mo6+) reduction and Fe3+ reduction of leaves extracted from Morinda coreia were67.75 and 65.70±0.34% at 120 µg/mL concentration and the IC50 were 56.53µg/mL and 20.74 µg/mL concentration. Antibacterial activity showed the maximum zone of inhibition of 20 mm against Staphylococcus aureus at 500 µg/mL concentration. GC-MS analysis showed antioxidant compounds such as flavones and oleic acid.

Conclusion: Morinda coreia leaves can be used as a good antioxidant agent, which should be formulated as capsules.
