Abstract
Background: Aconitum heterophyllum (A. heterophyllum) is an herb of the family Ranunculaceae. It is also known for its medicinal purposes. Its tuberous roots are the main part which is used to prepare different traditional preparations and various studies carried out in pharmacology of this part only. It grows in colder parts of India. It is a drug with high therapeutic value as its root is bitter in taste, tonic, alleviates dysentery, digestive, useful in diarrhoea, cancer, etc. It is a highly valuable drug.
Objective: A. heterophyllum has many essential chemical compounds like atisine, atidine, Heteratisine, etc. which are highly potent for the treatment of different conditions. The objective of this review is to provide a retrospective study based on its different pharmacological potential.
Results: Recent studies of A. heterophyllum are based on the characterization, and pharmacological evaluation. A. heterophyllum possesses significant anti-cancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, anti-diarrheal, hypolipidemic, antibacterial, immunobiological, and antimicrobial activities.
Conclusion: The present review summarizes the anti-cancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, anti-diarrheal, hypolipidemic, antibacterial, immunobiological, and antimicrobial potential of A. heterophyllum However, extensive research is required to establish it as a potent formulation for different activities, which can be further utilized in different diseases and disorders.
