Abstract
Antibacterial activities of the essential oil of oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) on Salmonella enterica subsp. Entericaserovar Typhimurium ATCC 14028, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 2783, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Bacillus subtilissubsp. spizizenii ATCC 6633, Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus ATCC 6538, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 6538 and Rhodococcus equi ATCC 6538 were determined. Gram-positive bacteria were more susceptible to the oregano oil than Gram-negative ones, thus the weakest effect was shown on Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Of the tested bacteria, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aures and Staphylococcus saprohyticus were the most susceptible to oregano oil. Compared with the antibiotic ampicillin oregano oil possessed stronger antimicrobial activity.
