Abstract
Multi antibiotic resistance to Helicobacter pylori has been the main cause for the treatment failure. The development of new anti- Helicobacter pylori drugs and search for novel molecules has been extended to medicinal herbs that offer safe, decreased relapse and no resistance towards bacteria.
This study was carried out to investigate the anti-H. pylori activity of the methanolic and aqueous root bark extract of Plumbago zeylanica. Well-Agar diffusion and disc diffusion method was used to determine anti- H. pylori activity. It was revealed that the methanolic root bark extract of P. zeylanicashow promising antibacterial activity against the test bacteria (It was also observed that the antibacterial activity of the extractincreased with increasing concentration. Methanolic extract of P.zeylanicaexpressed significant potency against Helicobacter pylori which increased with the increasing concentration of the extract. Keeping in view the strong antibacterial activities of thisherb,it is therefore recommended that more research work should be carried out in order to develop an alternative and safeanti H. pyloridrugs.
