Abstract

Portulaca oleracea Linn. (Common Name Purslane) is succulent plant in the family Portulacaceae in which word Portulaca is obtained from the Latin ‘porto’ which means to carry, and ‘lac’ means milk, as this plant has juice which is milky in nature. Purslane has soft, red stems and sequential leaves which remains combined to stems.  According to available literature and studies done so far Portulaca oleracea has been reported to have properties such as analgesic and anti-inflammatory along with anti-oxidant properties, cancer treatment ability, wound healing, bronchodilator, neuroprotective, ability to control cholesterol level and many other biological and pharmacological activities. The plant also possesses nor-adrenaline, dopamine, vitamin A, vitamin C, Olearacins , fatty acids, saponins, tannins and other related  flavonoids.
