Abstract

Present study pertains to in silico analysis of gene content of chloroplast genomes of ten solanaceous plant species. Whole chloroplast genome sequences of the solanaceous species under study were downloaded from ‘Organelle Genome Resources’ section of NCBI in GenBank format. Gene information was obtained from ‘Gene Database’ as well as from GenBank files to describe various genes in chloroplast genomes of solanaceous species. Typically there were 110 unique genes and 6 hypothetical chloroplast reading frames (ycfs). 15 genes and 3 ycfs were observed to be duplicated in the IR regions making a total of 125 genes and 9 ycfs.  Among different genes, 75 code for proteins (4 in IR), 1 for small plastid RNA (sprA), 30 for tRNA (7 in IR) and 4 genes code for rRNA (All in IR). Out of total 75 protein coding genes, 60 were present in LSC, 11 in SSC and 4 in IR regions of chloroplast genome.

Keywords: Photosynthesis, NADH dehydrogenase, photosystems I & II, in silico.
