Abstract

Phlogacanthus thyrsiflorus Nees (Lal basak) is an extroverted deciduous shrub that is used to treat illnesses in several herbal medicines. The antifungal, antioxidant, pro-diabetic, extremely pro-inflammatory, pro-cancer, hypolipidaemic and hepatoprotective function of this plant has been documented. It has also been documented that various parts of the plant are being used as a non-septic, fungicide and obviously pro-allergic. A wide range of chemical compounds have been isolated from Lal basak, including diterpene glucoside, phloganthoside. Polyphenol components derived from the plant are flavonoids, tannins, phytosterols, phenols, glycosides, glycerol, volatile and vegetable oil galacto-glycero, etc. This review provides the information on morphology, phytochemistry and pharmacological uses of the Lal basak plant.

Keywords: Lal basak, ethnopharmacology, pharmacological, phytochemical.
