Abstract
Salt stress is one of the major environmental issues that globally impairs almost all aspects of plant growth and adversely affect yield. The present study was done to examine the effect of salinity on seed germination of Vigna mungo commonly known as blackgram or urad bean. The seeds of V. mungo were subjected to four concentrations of NaCl with resulting electrical conductivity: 3.65, 7.30, 10.96 and 14.60 dS m-1. There was a reduction in the seed germination rate with the increasing salt stress. Under excess salinity, the germination speed and coefficient of velocity of germination was reduced. Among the cultivars studied, V. mungo cv. PU 1 was found to be salt tolerant and V. mungo cv. T 9 was found to be susceptible on the basis of germination parameters.
