Abstract

Water springs rank high among the priorities of any human civilization. A large number of people in India use spring water for drinking and other domestic purposes. Although there are numerous springs in India which provide potable water to the local residents, very few of them have been studied so far for water quality estimation. This review is therefore, compiled with the objectives to describe the studies undertaken in India in the recent past to characterize the physicochemical and microbial parameters of potable spring water. The studies reveal that in most part of India the spring water is contaminated with microorganisms.
