Abstract
The effects of different carbon sources such as glucose, galactose, mannose, sucrose, lactose, starch, mannitol and sorbitol were studied on plant regeneration in Bacopa monniera L. Pennel. Shoot multiplication and rhizogenesis was significantly higher with mannose. However, the cultures devoid of carbon sources showed considerable number of plantlets even though the regeneration response was delayed. In order to study the carbohydrate nutrition in relation to chlorophyll synthesis and protein metabolism, total carbohydrate, pigment and protein contents of the regenerants were estimated. In sucrose and mannose supplemented media maximum carbohydrate content was observed (42 and 37 mg/g respectively). In cultures without sugar and supplemented with lactose, minimum carbohydrate content was observed. In lactose supplemented medium, more accumulation of pigments was noticed compared to other carbohydrates or in a medium without sugar. Sucrose supplemented cultures showed the highest amount of proteins (36.84 mg/g) followed by mannose (31.30 mg/g) and galactose (28.36 mg/g).
