Abstract

Plant antiviral proteins or ribosome-inactivating proteins have been widely isolated from different species including Celosia cristata. Nowadays, they have got various defensive, agricultural, clinical and biotechnological applications. Considering the pharmaceutical importance of Celosia plants, as potent antiviral sources, the antiviral abilities of two ornamental and two wild types of Celosia were investigated. The results showed that both of the ornamentals and one of the wild plants possess antiviral activities towards tobacco mosaic virus before and after flowering stages. Partial comparative biophysical characterization on the bases of temperature (60°C against 80°C) resistance and dilution (1:5 against 1:10) predicted that the proteineous and non-proteineous purification methods might be differentially used for the more identification of the antiviral elements in different test plants.
