Abstract
Our aim is to appraise the effect of salt stress (sodium and calcium chloride) on faba bean (Vicia faba L. cv.aguadulce) by studying the expression of some phyto-biochemical metabolites in the plant. At the flowering stage, faba bean plants were stressed with different concentrations of sodium chloride alone or in combination with calcium chloride. Secondary metabolites content (like total phenolics, flavonoids and condensed tannins) increased in faba bean plants under NaCl salinity. A similar trend was recorded in primary metabolites content (such as proline and total proteins), except for total carbohydrates which decreased in response to NaCl treatments. Calcium chloride combined with sodium chloride induced an increase of secondary metabolites and a decrease of primary metabolites. Therefore, this study was designed to assess the changes in these phyto-biochemical indicators in response to sodium and calcium chloride.
