Abstract

The United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) states that “access to safe water and sanitation and sound management of freshwater ecosystems are essential to human health and to environmental sustainability and economic prosperity”. Hence ways of improving provisions of water supply and sanitation in small communities form an important aspect in realizing the objective of this goal. To this end a survey of 326 households was conducted in some rural communities of Ondo State to assess the SDG 6 coverage. Geophysical surveys were also carried out to ascertain the most probable location for groundwater abstraction in the areas. 12% of the households had improved sanitation facilities, 44% had unimproved facilities while 44 percent defecate in the open fields and bushes. Only 12% of respondents used water from the central boreholes while 61 6% drink water from the River. From this study, it was found that provision of treated boreholes water with overhead storage tanks, safe water fetching point end establishment of water, sanitation and hygiene committee (WASHCOM), and training the WASHCOM will improve water supply and sanitation in the rural communities studied.
